A new pet?

Connor is playing in the garden when he comes across a beetle!  A shiney black beetle with a hard shell and long legs, just scurrying along minding it's own business.....

Devlin and Connor call out to the rest of the boys, and Emilio, Jack and Alex soon come running to see what all the fuss is about!

There's a general discussion about the possibility of Connor taking the beetle inside and keeping it as a pet!

(He's certainly right about that!!!)

In the meantime, what with all the discussions going on, Mr Beetle makes a hasty (and unseen)  departure....

Seeing Connor start to get a bit upset about the unlikelihood of the beetle becoming his new 'pet', the boys try to placate him, suggesting some nice cuddly pets that they know mum would be happy with!

(Ahh yes, nice fluffy, cuddly pets....good suggestions boys!)

(WHAT?? I don't think so....I think that's enough suggestions for now, thank you boys!)

In the end they realise that not only has Connor gone off in a 'real huff', but so has the beetle!

They leave Connor to his sulk and go off to play football!

My four Gregor boys!
L to R: Jack (rewigged 71/72), Alex (Puddle eyes 73/74), Emilio (rerooted 1975?), Devlin (1969 PJs)...

  1. Ha ha, I can just imagine the reaction if my boys wanted some of those pets as well....fortunately it seems Mr Beetle escaped and poor little Connor is left without his pet...hope he doesn't sulk for too long... Reminds of the time I kept a couple of crickets as pets! Makes me shudder now.

    1. Oh yes, I do NOT do creepy crawlies! I'm just about ok with butterflies and ladybirds....although I must admit that when I was taking these photos, I was fine with the beetle. I regularly see them here in the garden as they like to hide under piles of leaves and we get a lot of those falling from the lemon trees!

  2. Heehee.... that reminds me of my brother's earwig farm - it kept mum out of our den for years!

    1. Oooooh gawd, I really do NOT like earwigs!! I think I'll stick with the dogs, the budgies and the parrot!

  3. Like you I'm not keen on any insect and certainly not as a pet......though I do feel for poor Connor. Perhaps he could adopt and take over looking after one of your little doggies instead?
You have a wonderful group of such individual lads there. I'm most impressed!

    1. I do feel for him too Kendal, being the smallest he tends to get a bit of a bum deal!!!! You'll notice that the others just left him alone to go inside and they stayed out to play, not good really! I think he can have a nice furry pet of his own soon, maybe a rabbit (I think I have one just his size hanging about here somewhere!).
Thanks for the nice comment on the boys, I am happy that they are each different from the other!

  4. He he great story Sharon. I love the way you put speech bubbles in and a beetle with personality - so funny.
I'm loving the boy's T shirts too, especially the Spanish bull ones, did you apply the logos with iron on or did you find fabric with it on already?

    1. Thank you Rosie! I'm not very good at stories to be honest. I get ideas in my head but they don't pan out well when I put them down in words. The truth is, I actually thought of the beetle having a 'voice' before I even thought of the boys getting into the story, as I saw him seemingly walking into the wall a few times like he was drunk!!! LOL, poor fellow! I wonder if he did get it 'in the ear' from the wife when he got home?
As for the teeshirts, those two with the bulls are actually commercially made tee shirts that come on hangers and you hang them in the window of the car!!!! I bought a whole bunch of them years ago in Granada and then gave most away, and then spotted a few more in Malaga Province, so grabbed them. I recently searched on line for more, and found a couple of companies in the UK who do them and sell on ebay. I'm glad you like the boys in these ones, thank you!!

  5. what is it about boys and beetles? A A Milne certainly observed the same all those years ago. Love the boy's clothes - I have the same question as Rosalind about those motifs.

    1. Goodness knows but I really hope they forget all about them now and think of something else to play with!!
Thanks very much on the boys clothes DollMum, glad you like them. You will see above about the teeshirts! I would like to find more of other places in Spain too, I did find one of Sevilla but it was really expensive, so I gave that one a miss....wish I hadn't now!!! I will keep looking and if I see any will get them and perhaps offer them on here or something.

    1. Thanks so much Barbara, I'm glad you enjoyed my little 'story'. I was into newts and snails as a child and used to always be collecting them and bringing them home.....I did occasionally catch grasshoppers but never beetles, I've always found them too creepy by half!!!
